The Recovery Room--Serena's Story
March 20th: SCGRRescue answered a plea about a 6-month old golden that had been hit by a car and left for dead. The East Valley Shelter picked her up, did X-rays and sent out an alert:
They don't get sweeter or prettier...Serena, a 6-month old gorgeous Golden Retriever pup has multiple fractures of the right pelvic girdle. The right pubic bones are fractured, the wing of the ilium is fractured, the right ischium is fractured. I do not know if she needs surgery or cage rest but either way she must get out of the shelter ASAP
Within three hours of this alert, SCGRRescue was at the shelter and had her at Dr. Schulman's in West Los Angeles. She had sat in the shelter for three days waiting for her family to come and get her. Of course, they never did. We called immediately and got her out on what they call a "Good Samaritan" since she was not available to be adopted for another day.

March 21st: Serena was operated on and her prognosis is excellent. Luckily no internal organs were involved and only one side of her was hit. She was so quite and sweet on the ride to the hospital, that she definitely earned her name, Serena.
April 5th: Report from Serena's foster mom: Serena is healing nicely and her bowel movements are getting firmer by the day. We're still working on acclimating her to our household. She isn't housetrained (she did well for the first 24 hours when we first received her, but since then she's being going potty indoors), and she is overly enthusiastic about our cat. She likes to chase her. She's very very sweet though, and we're hoping we'll be able to sort out these kinks.
April 17th: Serena is doing very well. She continues to have regular visits with her vet, who says Serena is healing wonderfully but her movement still needs to be restricted for another 5 weeks. Much credit is due to her vet. Her surgery wound has healed beautifully and she is very steady on her feet. She is still on minimal exercise and needs to spend most of her day in a confined space. This pretty pup is feeling like a million bucks, so being made to sit still for many hours a day is no fun. Luckily she has two new best friends (Daniel and Bailey) who help her pass the time. Daniel is her human 5-month old foster brother. Daniel thinks Serena hung the moon. They adore each other. Serena has excellent instincts with children. Her other best friend is Bailey (a 100-pound gentle-giant rescue Lab). It was love at first sniff for Serena and Bailey. They are inseparable. Serena is a very smart girl and her housetraining is coming along wonderfully. Serena is still a cat enthusiast (she likes to chase our cat) but we are hopeful that the novelty of cat chasing will eventually wear off. She still has a long way to go with her recovery but we have no doubt that in a few short months, this lovely girl will be good as new.
May 4th: Serena was able to leave Dr. Schulman's on Friday of last week. She is doing really well at her foster home in Malibu overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean. What a great place to recoup.... She will need lots of rest for her to heal. Only short walks to go potty. She is such a great patient, doesn't whine or make a sound. All she wants is to be loved and held. Her foster mom says she is opening up and feeling her oats...she wants to play.
May 25th: Little Serena is doing very well and now has a clean bill of health from her vet. She is very, very happy to be up on her feet again and loves nothing more than to play, play, play after so many weeks of confinement. She especially enjoys her daily hikes through the Santa Monica mountains. She is a super-sociable little girl who wants to be best friends with every dog and human she meets. She is still very much a young-un at heart, and loves to plot grand schemes to steal toilet paper and flip flops. But she’s a quick study, and is learning to distinguish her toys from human footwear and toiletries. We are very proud that she is now 100% housebroken. What a good girl! Serena will be spayed this coming Wednesday, and after that she is looking forward to a hiatus from veterinary visits for a while (cars and vets make her nervous; given the ordeal she went through with her accident, we completely understand.)
