The Recovery Room--Jewel's Story

Jewels

May 19, 2009: Jewels came into rescue when her family lost their home and had to move into an apartment. She had lived with her family her entire life and she, as well as the kids, were very sad at the parting. Jewels had an infection on her right rear toe from where she lost a toenail, no hair at all on her tail or the top of her nose, and was overweight. The hair loss indicated a possible thyroid problem, and the vet exam of her toe showed a huge tumor on the toe! It had actually grown into the bone to the end of the toe and pushed the toenail out.

May 21st: Additional tests showed Jewels is, indeed, hypothyroid and will need medication the rest of her life. Hopefully, though, her coat will improve, and her tail will once again support a plume!

June 5th: Jewels had her toe amputated yesterday; it took a lot longer than the vet anticipated but Jewels came through just fine although in pain in spite of pain meds and shots. She whimpered on the trip home and through the night, but by morning she was pretty much her old self, eating well and coming over for pets. Her medication routine has her foster mom trying to keep everything straight: Inflammation med-1.5 once a day; thyroid med-1 once a day; antibiotic-2 twice a day; and pain med-2 three times a day. It's enough to drive a math major crazy!

Oh yes, Jewels also has cataracts forming so she gets eye salve twice a day. But she is sweet, gentle, calm...a good match for a couch potato! She will be in recovery about three weeks, with wet bandage changes every two days the first week.
